Custom-defined Regions in your referral database simplifies working with geographies

For many of our help line clients, they have geographic areas that are a collection of towns, cities and/or counties known by a colloquial name, like the “Greater Toronto Area” or “Northern Virginia”. These areas themselves are not official entities – they don’t have a unified government for example – but rather are informal but well-known “regions” composed of two or more official entities. In iCarol, we call these “regions” and they can make it easier to work with geography. For example, your resources in your referral database – storing service providers to whom you might send your clients for specialized help – might have service areas that go beyond the actual city in which they are located. For each of these resources, it would be laborious to manually select the same, say, seven counties the compose a region. Instead, you can define that region once in iCarol (indicating that it contains a collection of cities, counties, and/or states and provinces). Then when you are assigning service areas to each resource, you can simply select that pre-defined region, and iCarol knows the underlying entities composing it. These regions can be used elsewhere in iCarol, such as in filters for statistics and reporting, and other places as well.
