Purple Day: Raising Awareness for Epilepsy

Each year on March 26, Purple Day®* serves as a global initiative dedicated to raising awareness about epilepsy and supporting those affected by it. The 2025 theme, “Power In Purple,” emphasizes the resilience and strength of the epilepsy community, aiming to turn awareness into action and foster a more inclusive and understanding society.

The Origins of Purple Day

Purple Day, also known as World Epilepsy Day™, was established in 2008 by Cassidy Megan, a nine-year-old from Nova Scotia. Inspired by her own experience with epilepsy, Cassidy wanted to promote understanding and reduce stigma around the condition. In 2009, with the support of The Anita Kaufmann Foundation and the Epilepsy Association of Nova Scotia, Purple Day became an internationally recognized event.

Why Purple?

Purple has become the universal color associated with epilepsy awareness, largely due to Cassidy Megan’s efforts. On March 26, individuals and organizations around the world participate by wearing purple, decorating spaces, and sharing information on social media to increase visibility and support for those living with epilepsy.

Ways to Participate

Power in Purple Week (March 19-March 26)

Leading up to Purple Day, various activities take place to help raise awareness. Some of the ways individuals can get involved include:

  • Engaging on Social Media
By using hashtags #PowerInPurple and #PurpleDay on platforms like X (Twitter), Instagram, Facebook and TikTok, people can share photos, update their profile headers, and spread key messages about epilepsy awareness.
  • Sharing Personal Experiences
Individuals affected by epilepsy are encouraged to share their personal stories through platforms like eJourney, a community blog, to help educate others and contribute to a more informed public dialogue.
  • Supporting Through Donations
Donations to epilepsy-related organizations contribute to ongoing efforts in education, advocacy, research, and community support programs.
  • Learning Seizure First Aid
Seizure First Aid training provides essential knowledge on how to respond to a seizure. On-demand certification programs offer participants the skills needed to assist in emergency situations, with a 2-year certification upon completion.

The Impact of Awareness Efforts

By participating in Purple Day activities, individuals contribute to a broader effort to break down stigma and improve understanding of epilepsy. Increased awareness can lead to better support systems, early diagnosis, and improved quality of life for those affected.
