Recognizing 988 Day
CW: This blog post discusses suicide. If you are emotionally distressed, please prioritize self-care and consider reaching out to a support person or call/text 988 which is available 24/7 throughout the US and Canada.
Every year on September 8, advocates, crisis services, and communities across the United States and Canada recognize 988 Day. This day is set aside to highlight the importance of the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline. This three-digit number has transformed the way individuals in crisis can access timely and compassionate support for suicide prevention, mental health, and substance use challenges. Much like 911 for medical and safety emergencies, 988 ensures that help is just three digits away, creating a stronger, more cohesive crisis response system across North America.
Building a Comprehensive Crisis Continuum
Since its designation, 988 has helped unify services that once felt fragmented. Individuals in crisis no longer have to navigate a maze of resources or remember a 10-digit phone number. Instead, they can call, text, or chat with 988 to be immediately connected to trained professionals who are ready to listen, provide support, and guide them to safety or continued care. This simple number has become a critical connector within the wider continuum of behavioral health care, bridging helplines, mobile crisis services, and stabilization resources to better serve people where and when they need it most.
Recognizing Crisis Workers and Advocates
At the heart of 988’s mission are the people who make it all possible. Across the U.S. and Canada, trained staff and volunteers answer calls, texts, and chats at all hours of the day and night. Their work is emotionally demanding, and often carries the risk of secondary trauma, yet time and again, these frontline crisis workers show up with empathy and compassion to meet someone in their darkest moments.
At iCarol, we have had the privilege of supporting crisis centers, suicide prevention programs, and now 988 centers for over 20 years. We have witnessed firsthand the dedication of those who build and sustain these services. They are advocates shaping public policy, program leaders managing complex systems, and the everyday heroes on the other end of the line. To all of you: thank you. Your courage, compassion, and persistence save lives and bring hope to countless individuals and families.
You Are Not Alone
988 Day also serves as a reminder to anyone struggling with thoughts of suicide, overwhelming stress, or mental health challenges: it is brave to reach out for help. Just as you would call 911 for a physical emergency, dialing 988 connects you to support for emotional pain and crisis. You are not alone, and help is available.
If you or someone you know is struggling, please reach out: dial 9-8-8, or visit 988lifeline.org. Compassionate, trained crisis counselors are available 24/7 to listen and support you.
Moving Forward Together
988 Day is both a celebration of the progress made and a call to action for continued support. As communities, organizations, and technology partners like iCarol, we all have a role to play in ensuring this system is strong, sustainable, and accessible to everyone who needs it. Let’s advocate for these critical first response services to receive ample funding and the resources they need to carry out this life-saving work. Without the support of legislators and other leaders, these services face numerous challenges and may cease to operate. It’s more important than ever that we join together to continue building a crisis response network that saves lives and strengthens communities across North America.
