Spoons to Share, Because We Care
Understanding “Spoon Theory”

If you’ve visited iCarol at any conferences this year, you’ve seen us talk about “Spoon Theory.” It’s important to us because of how it applies to our customers and the people they serve.

“Spoon Theory” began in the chronic illness community, using spoons as a unit of measuring energy or effort.

We are all different, and we each begin our day with a different number of “spoons” available to complete the necessary tasks..

Some people start their day with fewer spoons to begin with. And, some use more spoons than others. A person with no physical or mental health limitations may require just one “spoon” of energy to shower and brush their teeth. For others, these tasks require more spoons.

Why It’s Important

We make a positive impact when we take the time to understand the lived experience and perspectives of others.

Working in helping professions requires emotional labor, deep empathy, and the ability to stay present in intense situations. Spoon Theory provides a common language to recognize and respect the limits of emotional and mental energy, even when those limits aren’t visible. It can help us be more patient with others, and ourselves.

Why We Care

The internal toll, vicarious trauma, and compassion fatigue of this work can be significant, so self-care is critical to the work you do.

At iCarol, we understand this, because we’ve been where you are.

Much of our staff come from crisis centers, information lines, and other contact centers. We understand, through personal experience, how difficult your work can be. And so we’re always looking for ways to give back and support you.
